   Here's the BIOS settings that I currently have in my laptop running Solaris/x86 7. Although Toshiba released more than one upgrade to the Tecra 550CDT BIOS, I still use version 6.50 for the simple reason: it works fine with Solaris, and I'm not sure that newer versions don't incorporate some Windows-specific "enhancements" that will break this compatibility.

I dare to repeat here a warning that you may encounter more than once across the pages describing installation of Solaris on Tecra laptop. Two changes to the default Toshiba's setup are mandatory:

  • Parameter Controller Mode in PC CARD section must be changed to PCIC Compatible in order to use PCMCIA card(s) with Solaris/x86.

  • One or both of devices Serial and Built-in Modem in I/O PORTS section must be disabled (set to Not Used) to free up IRQs if you're going to use one or two PCMCIA cards, e.g. network and modem.
